Medal-winning metallic

The Olympics start on Friday and everyone's focusing on bringing home the gold. No athletic ability? No matter. Just pick out one of these pieces from our high street edit and wear it for the Opening Ceremony instead.

From liquid silver to shimmering gold, metallics are one of the hot trends of the season. Check out our pick of wardrobe winners and let the Games (and the shopping!) commence...

Tap into two of this season's hottest trends with this Forties-style metallic pencil skirt in glamorous gold, £110 fromReiss.
'This sexy gold pencil skirt is perfect for evenings out,' says personal stylist Angela Barnard of My London Stylist. (mylondonstylist.co.uk) 'Team with a fitted black top tucked in to show off the deep waistband. Add a skinny belt and killer heels and you're good to go.'

One of the best things about metallics is that they are super easy to take from day to night - like these gold trousers, £24.99 from H&M. Dress them up or down as the mood takes you.

'These gold jeans are brilliantly versatile,' says Angela. 'Wear in the day with an oversize T-shirt and converse trainers or dress up for the evening with a skinny vest, black blazer and heels.'

Metallics don't have to be about full-volume glam. This elegant lace shell top, £12 from Warehouse, is wonderfully subtle and feminine - and still on trend.

'The subtle shimmer of this lace top is gorgeous for summer,' says Chantelle Znideric, award-winning London personal shopper. 'Team it with a pair of tailored ivory city shorts for the office and Pandora sandals in pink-rose, £125 from LK Bennett.'

For a clean and polished look, keep it simple with this silver skater-style dress, £66 from Warehouse.
'Metallics act as a neutral colour so you can team this dress with bold brights or pretty pastels - just remember to keep accessories to a minimum,' says Angela. 'A pair of heels and a clutch is all you need.

If you're going for that sporty utilitarian look, this metallic grey parka, £139 from Mint Velvet, is effortlessly stylish.
'Wear with slouchy harem pants and a simple, white ribbed vest-top and lace-up wedge sneakers,' says Chantelle. 'Or smarten it up with a black fitted body con dress and a pair of canary yellow leather wedge-sandals Oscar-de-la-Renta style for the evening.'

Glam rock has never looked sexier. Channel your inner rock chick with these metallic snakeskin leggings fromTopshop, £22.00.
'I love the snake effect of these Top Shop leggings,' says Angela. 'Wear them with an oversize chunky jumper and some wedge trainers for understated cool.

If you're after a sexy dress that won't break the budget, look no further than this Jane Norman leopard-print metallic dress, £19, from House of Fraser.
'All eyes will be on you in this dress,' says Chantelle. 'To ensure you don't replicate Bet Lynch's barmaid image, keep accessories minimal and wear with black metallic or shimmer opaque tights and black suede platform ankle-boots. Finally, accessorise with a skinny belt to break up the print.'

Metallics aren't just for a big night out. This silver metallic peplum top from H&M, £22.00, is the perfect way to bring a little glam into your daytime wardrobe.

'The length of this T shirt is just right for girls who'd rather cover their bottoms,' says Angela. 'Wear with skinny black leather or PVC jeggings, add a faux fur gilet and a pair of block-heeled ankle boots for an authentic rock chick feel.'

For an instant touch of glitz and glamour look for accessories with a hint of sparkle, like these ballerina pumps, £55 from Ted Baker.
'These cute pumps are perfect if you want to add a small splash of the metallic trend,' says Angela. 'Wear them with some skinny jeans and a fitted angora jumper for autumn weekends.'

Hot summer days (and nights) call for something with a little dazzle. For a disco-ready look, throw on this silver sequin skater dress, £65 from Top Shop.
'I love this cute sequin skater dress,' says Chantelle. 'All it should be styled with is a pair of cool Nike Dunk High trainers!'
